ow do we recognise a fairy? By her strength? Her fragility? Her ability to conjure up an entire enchanted world, simply through the power of her imagination? So it would seem, as we discover in these pages the worlds of Victoire de Castellane, creative director for Dior Joaillerie, and Lydia Courteille whose collections retrace myths and legends.
How do we recognise a magician? By the art of transforming gold tubes into a necklace like a halo of light, in a workshop not unlike an alchemist’s lair, as we saw at IsabelleFa, one of the last chainmakers? By the capacity to discern, in a rough diamond or an emerald uncovered in the depths of the earth, the precious stones which, once cut, will sparkle like a thousand stars on a parure by Chopard or Van Cleef & Arpels? By the ability to transform unsuspected longings into reality? By the talent to give form to the waking dreams of those who are still a child at heart? By their way of convincing us nothing is impossible?

This issue is dedicated to the fairies, magicians, alchemists and all those who are determined to defend age-old skills; who can transform the ordinary, even the extraordinary, with their hands; who devote themselves not to changing the world, they are not so presumptuous, but to bringing colour where there is grey and seeing the world as a thing of beauty.
