Les Ateliers - An Image Says More Than 1,000,000 Words

May 2016

Jewelry creators have always relied on sketches for the essential first step in the creative process. Whether they’re brainstorming for a new line, or with a customer, in the studio, a boardroom meeting or creating a CAD model. the ability to explore, research and adapt design options in mere minutes gives them an advantage that’s hard to overstate.

With Jewelry Design & Sketching, Les Ateliers present the first online concept sketching course that focuses exclusively on jewelry design. Alan Revere, Founder and Director of the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts in San Francisco, CA thinks,“This course is just terrific…first class! A monumental endeavor with a lot of work and resources that all show.”

“Today, there’s more emphasis than ever to provide a quick and representative visual before continuing downstream, digital or otherwise.” says Robert Ackermann, President and co-founder of Les Ateliers, himself an award-winning jewelry designer and a seasoned educator. Finding himself unable to provide a good answer to the many inquiries he received over the years from across the trade on where to learn jewelry sketching, he decided to provide the service himself.

Jewelry Design & Sketching consists of 11 carefully structured video lectures with a total runtime of 4 hours. The objective is to learn the fundamentals of free-handing and develop the sure handedness of a professional. Students will find an abundance of fun, real-world practice suggestions and projects. The course starts with drawing plain lines and ends with complex outlines, addressing how to sketch gemstones and how to go about tricky pavé layouts as well. The equipment is as low-tech as it gets: just pencil and paper. “Brilliant!” exclaims Ris Nguyen, Jewelry Designer at Mark Broumand in Los Angeles, CA,”I really am enjoying the lessons and am quite excited for subsequent ones. They are well thought out and easy to follow.“
