Holts Academy – Transforming the face of Britain’s jewellery industry

May 2011

In 12 years, Holts Academy – a not for profit social enterprise located in the heart of London’s diamond district, Hatton Garden – has transformed the British jewellery trade. Ahead of the curve, Holts Academy is bolstering Britain’s ability to challenge fierce international competition.

“More than 6000 people have gained vital technical and commercial skills at Holts Academy. They can now be found working for the biggest names in British jewellery*, including Graff, Garrard and Theo Fennell, or running their own successful enterprises and picking up numerous awards** - including the 2011 F.Hinds High Street By Design award. For many, attending Holts Academy courses saved their businesses or jobs,” says Lee Lucas, head of Holts Academy and an expert on education’s impact on sectoral development.

Thanks to staff with world-class expertise and vision, in addition to some 50 Holts courses – ranging from making a ring in two hours instead of two weeks, to designing using the latest technology – Holts Academy is now pioneering vocational qualifications in jewellery manufacturing, design and specific goldsmith crafts. Along with mentorship schemes for start-ups, Holts Academy has opened up attractive and structured career pathways in an industry which for centuries relied on traditional skills passed down informally through families.

Today, Holts Academy students include aspiring jewellers, designers, engravers, career changers, city workers, and individuals curious about making and collecting jewellery.
