Chokers/Collars were trendy into the 1920s and again in the ’40s, known then as “colliers de chien”. Through the last century this trend has repeated itself quite often. The common types of choker include Victorian, vintage, open collar, pendant. Historically, it was associated with high fashion, but could take on different meanings under different circumstances. Ballerinas and the upper class in the late 19th century commonly wore these types of chokers.
Chokers became quite popular among women and girls in the early 1970s and once again in late 1990s. The 1990’s fashion trend has recently resurfaced in the mid-2010s. Famous woman down the ages have adorned the choker and made this accessory a trend. Queen Victoria donned one quite regularly in the 1940’s. Princess Diana brought the trend back with a bang in the 1990’s.
