Cartier and China

At Cartier, this curiosity for the Far East had been building for a long time. Creations in a Chinese or Japanese style would appear from time to time, mentioned in the archives between 1877 and the early years of the 20th century. It was not until the inter-war years, in the maelstrom of the roaring Twenties, that this tendency was to become a veritable craze. From that time, Asian influence was regularly seen in the Maison Cartier creations. It impacted the design of jewellery, timepieces and motifs, featured in how specific materials were worked, and was occasionally distilled into an Art Deco type stylisation.
