Vaya con DEOS

A next-generation earphone accessory gives the iPhone and iPod a diamond makeover

“When in doubt, add diamonds” seems to be the dictum of the moment in fashion circles, where mobile phones, pens and even kitchen utensils are routinely festooned with bling. The result typically renders the object in question a cheaper, tawdrier facsimile. Not so with the new DEOS earphone covers, designed to slip over the ear pods of Apple’s universally popular iPhone and iPod. Made of titanium, a high-tech metal as light as aluminum and stronger than steel, the covers look so sophisticated that Apple might as well have designed them itself. Credit goes to designer Allison Lee Zeiss; DEOS, which stands for Defining Expression of Sound, is her brainchild.

Driven by the challenge of fusing luxury and technology, Zeiss embarked several years ago on a campaign to secure the computing giant’s endorsement of her products. The upshot of all that work is a sleek selection of diamond and titanium ear covers — pavéd with black, white or cognac stones, the covers range from $3,500 for a single 1-carat pair to $25,000 for a set teeming with 4.5 carats, currently sold at the Wynn resort in Las Vegas — that fulfill Zeiss’s mission: to create a product that lies at the auspicious intersection between luxurious accessory and style.

Play it by ear The DEOS 302 ear covers studded with cognac diamonds, $12,000. With white diamonds, they are $15,000, and with yellow diamonds, $40,000. Presented in a stylish boxed set.
