ACCESSORIES - Glitter Bags

September 2008

The rise of the luxury lifestyle has blurred the lines that once separated fashion from jewelry and watchmaking. Fashion brands now routinely manufacture complicated tourbillon timepieces.

Watchmakers design extravagant gem-set jewelry, and, in the latest boundary-crossing effort, jewelers are lavishing their art on designer handbags. Witness the slew of jeweled clutches now available from established jewelry houses, such as Roberto Coin, Damiani and Utopia, whose recent line extensions suggest that the Italians, with their luxe leather tradition, are well-suited to crossing categories. Not that they’re the only jewelers with designs on the lucrative handbag market. Japan’s Ginza Tanaka has introduced a platinum “bijoux bag” that, at $1,956,200, promises to break once and for all the notion that purses are mere one-season wonders.

Roberto Coin’s one-of-a-kind gold bags in leather, 24- and 18-karat gold with diamonds, $34,000

Utopia’s pearl-festooned lizard skin number, $9,900

New York designer Kara Ross’s Lucis natural karung and linen clutch with smoky topaz, $2,465, and Dea natural ring lizard and linen clutch with citrine, $2,055

Ginza Tanaka’s platinum “bijou bag,” set with 2,182 diamonds weighing 208 carats, $1,956,200
